ObesityObesity means having excess body fat. It differs from overweight, which means weighing too much. Weight may be the result of muscle mass, bone, fat and / or water in the body. Both terms mean that a person’s weight is greater than is considered healthy according to their height.

Obesity occurs over time, when you eat more calories than those who consume. The balance between calorie intake and calories that are lost is different for each person. Among the factors that could tip the balance include genetic makeup, excessive eating, consumption of fatty foods and lack of physical activity.

Being obese increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and certain cancers. If you are overweight, lose at least 5-10 percent of your weight can delay or prevent some of these diseases.
